The fortress of Neuf-Brisach (new Breisach) was erected between 1696 and 1702 under the reign of King Louis XIV., becaus France had lost, through the treaty of Rijswijk in 1697, the fortress of "old" Breisach to Austria, and therefore needed a new strong-point near the Rhine.
